Upon the death of his mother in September 2022, King Charles III ascended the British throne as the 40th monarch in history. As Head of the Commonwealth, he now presides over 56 independent countries, 15 of which he is the head of state. However, his new role comes with great expectations and challenges, particularly at a time when many question the relevance of a political monarchy in a modern democratic setting. King Charles III must now demonstrate the relevance of the monarchy to his subjects and the world, while also addressing issues such as racism and climate change.
