Africa is one big continent with a variety of cultures and accents. According to the renowned Africa Facts Zone, four African countries ranked higher than others for having the sexiest accents.
Let’s take a look at the African countries whose accents will leave you saying ooh-la-la!
1. South Africa
South Africa boasts 11 official languages. Its wide variety of ethnic groups, languages, and demographics contribute to its unique and complex accents.
You have the Pretoria accent, the Durban accent, and the Capetonian accent too. All of which are hard to imitate if one hasn’t spent years living in the country.
In Capetonian English for example, the pronunciation of the letter “a” in the word “paste” makes it sound like “pest”.
While South African English might sound different from others, its status as “native English” is widely accepted.
In fact, South Africa is often the only African country considered a native English-speaking country in many international job applications. Take it from someone who has been in the TEFL job market for a long time. But that’s a discussion for another day!
2. Zimbabwe
If you’re looking for an accent that’s as strong as rocks yet sexy, Zimbabwe‘s got you covered.
It’s a blend of English and indigenous languages. The Zimbabwean accent is known for its “j” and “ch” sound. For example, the “ch” in “church” can become a hard “j”.
What also sets this accent apart is the tendency to emphasize the syllables in words. A word like “protect” is pronounced as “po-ro-tect”.
Honestly, the Zimbabwean accent is music to our ears.
3. Nigeria
The most populous country in Africa is a melting pot of languages, including English, Hausa, Igbo, and Yoruba.
Hence, the Nigerian accent varies depending on the region but is often characterized by a distinct way of adding emphasis to word syllables.
A typical Igbo man can pronounce the name “Sydney” as “Sidini” with his thick accent. The Yorubas also have the ‘H’ factor where words like ‘Hair’ are pronounced as ‘err’.
Nonetheless, that’s obviously what makes the Nigerian accent sexy.
4. Egypt
When most Egyptians speak, they reflect at least some of the sounds and speech rhythms of their Arabic dialect.
And it’s no secret that Arabs have some seriously, sexy ‘rhotic’ accent that leaves you hooked on every word.
Case in point – Egyptian footballer, Mohamed Salah.
Go listen to a Mo Salah interview, you will see why ladies around the world drool over the Liverpool star.
So yeah, we agree that these four countries topping the list of sexiest accents, have their unique charm that will captivate your ears and hearts.
