More than 3000 Zindians from 100 countries contributed to ITU AI for Good Challenges on Zindi<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

December 4th 2023, Dubai UAE \/\/ COP28 – The International Telecommunications Union (ITU), Huawei, and Zindi jointly announced the winners of the AI\/ML for 5G-Energy Consumption Modelling Challenge<\/a> solutions as part of an official COP28 side event, Crowdsourcing AI Solutions for Climate Change<\/a>,<\/p>\n

The AI\/ML for 5G challenge, coordinated by ITU<\/a>, sponsored by telecommunications giant Huawei<\/a>, and hosted on the Zindi<\/a> platform for data practitioners, asked participants to use machine learning models to improve the energy consumption of 5G networks. Reducing energy use in 5G networks presents an opportunity to significantly reduce the climate impact of telecommunications.<\/p>\n

In 2023, more than 3000 participants from 100 different countries around the world took part in AI for Good challenges on Zindi<\/a>. They built solutions to problems ranging from disaster prevention and support for farmers to optimising fusion energy reactions, submitting more than 21,000 machine learning model predictions on the platform.<\/p>\n

\u201cThrough these competitions we gave away more than $46,000 in prizes to winners all over the world. This is helping our users get ahead and upskill on real-world machine learning challenges while also helping to combat the climate crisis and help organisations succeed,\u201d said Celina Lee, Zindi CEO and co-founder. \u201cI\u2019m incredibly proud of our contributions to the SDGs, including SDGs 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), and\u00a0 13 (Climate Action). I look forward to bigger and better AI for Good challenges in 2024.\u201d<\/p>\n

Winners will share their solutions as part of an official COP28 side event, Crowdsourcing AI Solutions for Climate Change<\/a>, which will be hosted by ITU on 2 December.<\/p>\n

\u201cWorking with Zindi, Huawei, and our many other partners has been a great way to contribute to the SDGs and in particular to using AI and ML for good,\u201d said Frederic Werner, AI for Good chief of strategy and operations. \u201cITU is committed to applying AI technologies to the complex challenges presented by the climate crisis.\u201d<\/p>\n

Huawei generously sponsored $23,000 in prizes, which were given to winning solutions, as well as best student performance, most creative solution, and other awards. The winning participant will also win an internship at Huawei.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
